Why we made verification something you finish later

A new account is useful on day one. We rebuilt onboarding so identity, income, and rent history are things you earn as you go — not a wall you hit before you can do anything.

For most of a year, a new Schedularly account started with a checklist. Verify your identity. Connect a bank. Upload a lease. Only then did the product do anything for you. It was honest about what it needed — and it was the single biggest reason people left before they ever saw their record.

The insight: trust can be deferred, not demanded

A verified rental record is valuable precisely because it is hard to fake. But that does not mean every proof has to arrive on the first screen. We split activation into steps that each unlock something concrete, and we let the account be genuinely useful in a "Limited" state until they are done.

Identity unlocks sharing and applying. Rent history unlocks the Score. Nothing is withheld to punish you — each step buys a specific capability.

What changed on the screen

  • An activation banner pairs incentives (points, unlocks) with honest disincentives — what a landlord still cannot see yet.
  • Identity verification is the "do this first" step because it unlocks Share and Apply.
  • The Schedularly Score stays withheld until real rent history is imported, so it never shows a number we cannot stand behind.

The result is an account that feels alive immediately and gets more powerful as you prove more. Verification is still the point — it just stopped being the toll booth.
